Creative method to teach Roadway Curve Design

Posted by & filed under Brain-based Learning, Math, STEM, Technology.

The concept of horizontal and vertical curves in roadway design is new to almost all students that enter the Highway Drafting and Route Design course.  There are a numerous design characteristics and equations to remember.  To aide in describing the horizontal curve of a roadway, Sandra Bowling presented a road model using the Micro Chargers race track that identified the characteristics of the various types of horizontal curves . After reviewing the horizontal curve components, the students were put into teams and given their own Micro Charger race tract to create a roadway and identify all the characteristics of the horizontal curve.

Sandra Bowling, PE, is a tenure-track Professor of Drafting and Design Technology at Valencia-West
