The AED, or Automated External Defibrillator, is an extremely valuable tool that saves many lives every day. It can be used by citizens as well as the Emergency Medical Services professional. Malls, airports, and many businesses have AEDs available for the bystander to use. As an EMT, we do not often witness a patient’s sudden cardiac arrest. Most often, the patient has gone into cardiopulmonary arrest and someone calls 911. When we arrive on the scene, sometimes CPR is being performed and the AED has been used, but more often than not, nothing is being done. This video is an excellent example of how the AED saves lives.
