The Cute and Useful Comma

Posted by & filed under EAP, TED, Video.

I teach English as a Second Language.  It is not always easy to convince students that punctuation is their friend, not something meant to torture them.  This is not just an issue for those for whom English is a Second Language.  I tell my students that this plagues native speakers as well.  This video is a brief, cute demonstration of how the comma wants to “help” with proper sentence structure and how it wants to “help” subordinators and coordinators.  At 5 minutes, it is a little long, but it is still a good length to serve as an introduction or as a brief review of one of the important uses of the comma.
