coffeepotchallengeimgCircles of Innovation is back, and we are kicking off the 2014 -2015 season with the “Fun Theory Challenge,” a circle around the idea that something as simple as fun is often the easiest way to engage people and change learning behaviors for the better. Please join us if you can. It is going to be a fun session. To RSVP your interest please click on any of the campus links below; you are welcome to join us on any campus. If you would like more information about our full season of Circles, Click Here.

In preparation for our first meeting though, we need a little help figuring out how much coffee we should bring, so we were hoping you could help us with this little problem. Let’s just call it the Coffee Pot Challenge.

The Question:

If Coffee pot A holds 32 ounces of coffee; about how many ounces does coffee pot B hold?

CoffeePot Now, chances are, if you are reading this, someone has already given you the challenge and you are here for the answer, or you are here to get your own copy of the challenge handout PDF. Click on any of the images above to download your own handout that you can use with colleagues or students.  The real challenge, we hope, is that you will take this PDF and go Walkabout. Challenge some of your colleagues and have some conversations about learning. Perhaps continue the discussion started by our keynote speaker at welcome back this year. “Why is it that question framing limits our ability to see and understand problems?” Perhaps you might even see students or colleagues shy away from the question because they perceive it as a math question and they aren’t “Math People.” This could be used to spark conversations on Mindset & Motivation, one of our favorite Circles from last year. In fact, Mindset & Motivation is set to come back to Osceola Campus on Sep 9th at 4pm. We welcome you to join us. Here is the RSVP link. Osceola Campus 4-308 Tue Sep 9th 4:00 – 5:00 pm

Ok, enough talk… I know that many of you are looking for the answer to the problem, so here it is.

And this is why I love you James. Simply brilliant question and answer. I couldn’t see it, or maybe just didn’t try hard enough because it was math. Great illustration of being blind to assumptions or being locked in to certain methodology.
