In the fall of 2013, a new course was piloted on the East Campus of Valencia College in Orlando, Florida. The one credit course was SLS2930 – Digital Learning Strategies, and the goal was to help students identify learning technologies that would enhance their learning experiences in college. Sent out through email, Twitter, and Facebook, this iMovie trailer was used to market the course to students. In the spring of 2014, SLS 2930 was expanded into a three credit hour course and two new student success/digital professors continued to build and expand the model. The team is currently working on best practices for infusing these technologies into Valencia’s New Student Experience courses. We are also currently working with local high schools to offer the content to high school students and to teachers as part of their recertification.
Student Blogging with WordPress – Model best practices for lifelong learning by having students post their assignments from their own blogs. Although course management systems such as ANGEL, Canvas, or Blackboard are wonderful, once a class is over students no longer have access, but using free blogging tools, they will always have their resources stored and easily accessible.
Life in the Cloud with One Drive, Google Drive or iCloud – Teach students to collaborate and store information in the cloud. No more thumb drives, no more forgetting files on the desktop, or leaving essays on the kitchen table. Welcome to life in the cloud.
Evernote – Introduce a new form of note taking that harnesses the power of ubiquitous computing. Available across platforms (iOS, Windows, Android) to be able to communicate, collaborate and share in real-time with anyone in the world!
Google Hangouts – Meet with groups of students through video conferencing or have students meet and stream their panel discussions to YouTube.
ScreenCast-O-Matic – Don’t write the instructions, record your screen and make a video of your instructions, or better yet, have your students record their screens to demonstrate their knowledge of content.
Pixlr – Get creative using this free, cloud-based version of image editing software that works a lot like Photoshop. Students can use this to create and edit photos for use in presentation software, or designing Infographics.
TouchCast – You kind of have to see this to believe it, let’s just say that it could be the future of interactive video and the Internet.

Digital Learning Now Initiative
Established in 2010 Digital Learning Now is a national initiative of the Foundation for Excellence in Education (ExcelinEd), founded by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, with the goal of advancing state policies that create a high-quality digital learning environment to better equip all students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in this 21st-century economy.
In August of 2014 U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers from Washington introduced a bill just before Congress’ August recess, H.R. 5303, to promote high-quality blended learning schools across the country.
“There are currently 3 million unfilled jobs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, although these jobs provide some of the highest salaries and long-term job security. It is critical that we prepare our students and get them excited about careers in STEM”.
“We trying not to focus too much just on the technology… One of the real goals for us in this project was to … really close that digital learning gap quickly and be able to get kids and teachers access to the learning opportunities afforded by technology.”
“Cool new gadgets tend to help motivate easily distracted students… The problem we have in K-12 is we are not engaging the kids because we are not using the things they use outside the classroom, to gather information and communicate, inside the classroom”.
More than 11,000 Central Florida 11th-graders — about 43 percent of the region’s juniors — have not yet passed an online course, even though they must do that to earn a diploma next year. The class of 2015 is the first to fall under the online-learning requirements the state adopted four years ago.
Many teenagers spend a maddening amount of time staring at screens. But their love of cellphones and comfort with computers doesn’t seem to mean they all want to take an academic course online — a requirement to graduate.
