Today, Rob McCaffrey and I submitted our applications to the Planar Clear Concept Awards for a chance to win a Planar® LookThru™ OLED transparent display. If you haven’t seen one of these yet, you should take a look at the video below, or click here to read about the 9 Things You Need to Know about Transparent OLED. Upon learning about the opportunity, Rob and I both had quite a few ideas on how we could utilize this new technology at our college’s campuses. The more we thought about it, and the more we talked to our colleagues, the more excited we got. Simply put, there are quite a few interesting applications for this technology in 21st-century teaching, learning, and edutainment.
Because of the capabilities of the OLED, this technology can be used in a wide variety of architectural settings. At first, we thought about LookThru advertisements and virtual orientations at different locations around campus. The video, GIF, and image files below show some samples of how this would look. As we walked about campus though, we quickly identified other applications, ones that could allow for student driven R&D, some new collaboration opportunities across programs at the college, and other interactive edutainment.

LookThru – 5 Minute Professor
LookThru – Video Conferencing
LookThru – Study Materials
LookThru – Virtual Office Hours
LookThru – Lightboard
For those of you not familiar with our Lightboard work, you should take a look at this link here. The LookThrough would revolutionize this work and allow for immediate interactive digital projection with no need for post production.
Our other submissions had to do with artistic applications of the display. For example, LookThru glass could be placed built into our dance studio or our art exhibit, or the LookThru glass could be used on stage like in the image below. Imagine the window at our Wooten art exhibit coming alive with a virtual curator, one that describes the art as you look in and see it.
