Why use OER?

  • Reduce costs for students
  • Teach students where and how they can learn beyond your course
  • Create reusable content to share
  • Curate content from sources to create something new or custom for your needs
  • Reduce the time to create all of the content yourself

Opportunities and limits

  • Gives you a chance to expand the content you have with no to little costs
  • Gives you a chance to bring in multimedia and other rich content
  • Collaborate with colleagues to create something that works for your courses
  • Store the created content locally so you can access it anytime
  • Linking to outside OER means you take the chance it can disappear
  • It can take additional time to search for and implement outside content
  • Copyright still applies (can’t just copy things unless they have the right license)

Some Resources for OER in Business

BC Open Textbooks BCcampus OpenEd includes a wide variety of business textbooks, many peer-reviewed by BC faculty.

Boundless – Business Boundless provides five textbooks under the subject Business such as Business Marketing, Business Management, Business Finance, and Business Economics.

Business Fundamentals Business Fundamentals was developed by the Global Text Project, which is working to create open-content electronic textbooks that are freely available.

Merlot – Business Merlot includes over 90 business titles on a variety of topics.

OER Commons – Business and Communications OER Commons provides a curated collection of history textbooks.

Open Textbook Library University of Minnesota’s Open Textbook Library includes over 30 business titles.

GlobalEDGE Online Course Modules for International Business This section provides interactive educational tools for use in the classroom or in executive training. These modules focus on issues pertinent to international business and include a case study or anecdotes, a glossary of terms, quiz questions, and a list of references when applicable.

Khan Academy – Finance and Capital Markets Videos on finance and macroeconomics.

MIT Open Courseware – Management At MIT Sloan, customized programs and experiences meet students’ specific needs and help them to reach their personal and professional goals. A commitment to concept-based action learning enables students to gain the experience and skills necessary to enhanced and lead their organizations – and improve the way business is done across the globe.

OER Business – Videos A collection of resources provided by Dallas TeleLearning, a part of the Dallas County Community College District.

Open Learn – Money and Business Open Learn provides a variety of courses covering topics such as “Preparing a project”, “Understanding different research perspectives”, “Different types of business”, Estimating the cost of equity”, and “An introduction to business cultures.

Open Yale – Economics Studies The Department of Economics at Yale offers a wide spectrum of courses for both specialists and non-specialists alike. For undergraduate majors, a core of courses in macro- and microeconomics, mathematics, and econometrics is required. Advanced courses offer training in economic history, finance, theory, international and developmental economics, market organization, human resources, and the public sector.

TED ED: Lessons Worth Sharing – Business Create and share lessons around any TED-Ed original, TED Talk or YouTube Video.

YouTube EDU – Business A collection of educational videos posted on YouTube.

Business Day – The New York Times Search through NYT’s articles on topics such as business and policy, markets, economy, entrepreneurship, and money.

HathiTrust HathiTrust is a partnership of academic & research institutions, offering a collection of millions of titles digitized from libraries around the world.
